Correct level of training
The following guidelines have been set out by the Health & Safety Executive to help you to assess the correct level of training and first aid cover needed for your workplace.

When there are special circumstances, such as remoteness from emergency services, shiftwork, or sites with several seperate buildings, there may need to be more first aid personnel than set out below. Increased provision will be necessary to cover for absences.
Your working environment can be assessed as:
- Lower risk - e.g. shops and offices, libraries
If you have fewer than 50 employees, the suggested number of first aid personnel is at least one appointed person.
If you have between 50-100 employees, the suggested number of first aid personnel is at least one first aider.
If you have over 100 employees, one additional first aider is suggested for every 100 employees.
- Medium risk - e.g. light engineering and assembly work, food processing, warehousing
If you have fewer than 20 employees, the suggested number of first aid personnel is at least one appointed person.
If you have between 20-100 employees, the suggested number of first aid personnel is at least one first aider for every 50 employed ( or part thereof).
If you have more than 100 employees , one additional first aider is suggested for every 100 employees.
- Higher risk - e.g. most construction, slaughter-houses, chemical manufacture, extensive work with dangerous machinery or sharp instruments
If you have fewer than 5 employees, the suggested number of first aid personnel is at least one appointed person.
If you have between 5-50 employees, the suggested number of first aid personnel is at least one first aider.
If you have more than 50, one additional first aider is suggested for every 50 employees.
